Der schwedisch-deutsche Politologe Jakob von Uexküll ruft den Alternativen Nobelpreis ins Leben. Er wird jährlich als Auszeichnung „für die Gestaltung einer besseren Welt“ vergeben. Erste Preisträger sind Hassan Fathy (Ägypten) “”…for developing an Architecture for the Poor” und Stephen Gasking mit der Organisation Plenty International “for caring, sharing and acting with and on behalf of those in need at home and abroad.”
